Under the Green Word, male Veena are not permitted to live in the villages, nor hold positions of rule or power. Once a Veena is determined to be male, he will be taught the ways of the Wood-Warder. This training takes many years and is incredbily brutal, more often than not resulting in the death of the young jack. Once the jack obtains the title of master, he may then live on his own. Male Veena Viera live in extreme solitude with no community. Everything, from food to weapons to clothing must be obtained by themselves without others helping. They often live and die alone, protecting the forests in which they dwell.Growing up Ash dreamed of being a Wood-Warder worthy of his peoples respect, unfortunately for Ash the Garleans crushed that dream before it had time to take root. Despite never being able to fully take the Skatay Range due to the efforts of his people, the Veena, there were losses, Ash's mentor included. Ash himself only survived thanks to a passing adventurer (herself lost in the woods) who intervened to save the young man's life. She effortlessly slew the Imperial Decurion whom moments before had slain Ash's mentor. She left as quickly as she had arrived. a flash of light and iron, the Garleans who only a moment ago had slain his mentor, now found themselves the victims of the same fate.Ash, bloodied, awestruck and devastated all at once, found himself disillusioned by the loss of his mentor. If these outsiders were powerful enough to defeat the man who was supposed to be teaching him to defend his home what was the point? And if an outsider was able to defeat the Garleans so handily, should he not go learn from these outsiders? They were obviously more qualified to teach him the arts of war than his own people. After some contemplation and time spent mourning and laying the remains of his mentor to rest, Ash resolved to give up his forest name and seek out a place where he could learn to be the warrior he wished to be.He packed the few provisions he had, grabbed his spear and headed to the port of Kugane, the one place that he knew he could find the information he wanted. It also happened to be the perfect place to gain passage on a vessel to wherever his destination turned out to be.Thus he found employment as a longshoreman in Kugane working under the name Ash Alarian (an homage to the woman who had saved him) and set about earning the wages needed to survive, and to set aside whatever was left after that for travel.

Ash didn't particularly enjoy working on the docks, unloading luxurys that only the rich could partake in wasn't exactly his dream job. The other dockworkers were pleasant company though and made the days pass swiftly. It also afforded him the rather pleasant perk of having the chance to speak with many a traveling adventurer whilst working there, one of which told him of a the Guild of Lancers deep in the woods of Gridania, much of their lifestyle sounded similar to his own upbring. With this information Ash resolved himself to travel there and prove himself amongst them.He gained employment on a vessel heading to the port of Limsa Lominsa, he continued to work under the name Ash Alarian, which at this point he had decided to keep as his city name. He worked a few seasons as a guard in an Ul'dah based caravan to save up some coin for room and board, since it hadn't been a particularly cheap voyage from Othard to Eorzea. But with a few coins to his name and a decent set of kit he finally made it to Gridania, a place to which he quickly took a liking.

He joined up with the Lancer's guild to see how his skills compared to the masters lancer's. It didn't take long for him to rise through the Lancer's guild and make a name for himself in Gridania, thankfully most of the skills he had acquired at home in the Skatay worked just as well in Eorzea as they did in Othard. He soon found he was blessed with a gift called the Echo that allowed him to resist the tempering of Primals. This turned out to be very lucrative and he quickly found himself in demand not only for guild work but with work from the Grand Companies of Eorzea. Some of Ash's comrades who had joined the Guild at the same time as him grew jealous and attempted to cause an "accident", compelled by gil and pride they assaulted him in the depths of the wood.Unfortunately for them Ash was just as competent at fighting Men as he was Primals.

Ash strove on, called by an inner need to grow stronger and more adept in the ways of war.Sadly for Ash, he found that he had outgrown his fellows in the Guild, the Echo granting him gifts that let him rise higher than normal folk could. He decided he needed a change of pace and so he took a step back from the Grand Companys and his work slaying Primals and began to travel alone for a time.Of course he still ran errands for the Grand Companies and the Scions whilst whenever they truly needed him but he primarily focused on further developing his skills. It was not long before on the outskirts of Ishgard he found a new mentor who recognized the work he had put into mastering his lance and offered him tutelage as a Dragoon. Ash loved every moment of his training, soaring through the air and striking down like star from the heavens, the power was intoxicating. He soon was given his Drachen armor, a declaration of his mastery of the lance.Content that he had improved himself enough for the time being he joined up with some of his comrades who were diving into the bowels of the Palace of the Dead in search of treasure. They had much luck and once again he felt rewarded for the practice and work he had done to better himself. They devastated their foes within the Palace. All went well for them, but Ash did come out with an extreme distrust for chests and a pair of absolutely charred boot.It was after returning from the depths of the Palace of the Dead and volunteering for a survey misson of Silvertear Falls and the corpse of the Greatwyrm Midgardsormr that things once again changed for Ash.The Greatwyrm not truly dead, merely sleeping, lashed out at the trespasser and challenged them, seeking to remind them he was a Lord above mortals and to dare not forget this.He tested Ash and found him wanting. Midgardsormr warned him that with the little strength Ash had, Ash would be consumed in the flames of Midgardsormr's children in the coming war.

Ash took this warning seriously and devoted himself to martial mastery of all kinds not just the lance. Thus transpired the events of the Dragonsong War. I'm sure you've read Edmont de Fortemps book on the subject so I won't transcribe it here, but in short, Ash did prove himself worthy in the eyes of the Greatwyrm and vowed to never stop bettering himself so he could be ever worthy of defending the star.Soon after the ashes of the Dragonsong War had settled, Ash decided that he should gather some gil and gear to sustain himself so that he wouldn't come to owe anyone whilst journeying. After his time in Ishgard he felt quite indebted to the Fortemps family and didn't particularly enjoy that feeling. This uncomfortable feeling inspired in him a need be able to do more than survive, he wished to thrive and to never be indebted again. He put a considerable amount of thought into planning how he would go about doing this and decided he'd first spend some time learning how to properly wield a blade. It was the favored weapon in the east and since he planned to join up with his friends that were working alongside the Doman revolutionaries it made sense to him that he should learn how to wield their weapons. Before this journey could begin though Ash wanted to learn how to wield a blade like warriors of the East. Even the Garleans had taken to their blades which to Ash meant they must be quite practical.Luckily for Ash he had made friends with a swordsman from Kugane whilst working with the Caravans of Ul'dah, their shared experiences of the bureaucracy of Kugane had been a fine thing for them to bond over whilst drinking and laughing during their off hours. It happened that his friend was not only a skilled warrior but had at one timed served as a member of the Sekiseigumi, Kugane's proffessional police comprised of Samurai. After a bit of time tracking his companion down he conviced him to let him hire him as a mentor (albeit with few drinks and some mild coercion). With this favorable development Ash began training under his new mentor's guidance, and after his morning training each day Ash would make use of what he had learned to earn himself some gil as well as reinforce the lessons into his muscles memory.Ash took the lessons from his friend to heart and to the Bloodsands.

The first few matches proved difficult, he had fought so long with a lance that he had let his original training with the blade lapse more than he thought. He had grown complacent and reliant on the distance and reach that his lance provided. This new challenge motivated him though, and he redoubled his efforts. With his friend's guidance he made quick progress, and with his earnings with from the Bloodsands Ash quickly realized he was benefiting from branching out and trying new arts more than he could have ever imagined. After six months his mentor gave him his final lesson and informed him there was naught more that he could teach him that wouldn't be better to learn through experience. That if he wanted to reach greater heights he should continue his daily regime of practice, and that Ash should seek more skilled foes than those found in the colosseum. So after some contemplation about what path to take next, Ash decided to return to caravan work once again. He had decided on a small break from constant self improvement and to rest his body and mind for a time before he once again put them to work. His Caravan work was peaceful, almost mindless work. Nothing the caravan came across was especially dangerous and together they enjoyed some relatively peaceful travels. When Ash's contract with the caravan company expired he decided not to renew it and to begin his journey to join up with the resistance in Othard.Ash collected the entirety of his remaining winnings from the Bloodsands and the gil he had earned from his time with the caravans, the combined total to his surprise turned out to be substantially more than he thought he had saved up. Thus with a heavy coin purse and a light heart Ash signed on with a ship heading to Kugane, choosing to earn his passage across rather than pay for one. Besides one Sahagin raid, in which Ash more than earned his fare (a fact his crew reminded him of everytime they drank together), the trip was joyously peaceful and uneventful. Ash enjoyed this time sailing knowing that it would be one of the last peaceful moments he would enjoy for quite awhile. After reaching Kugane and joining up with his friends in the resistance, Ash found himself traveling to the Azim steppe, the people there were honest and straight forward. Ash took quite a liking to their ways of life and quickly became fast friends with one of the local clans and with their help completed his mission in the steppe. From there he travelled back to Doma for the next stage of the war.
The flooding of Doma Castle and the downfall of the acting viceroy Yotsuyu goe Brutus.
They won the battle for Doma Castle, and they continued to win, all the way back to Eorzea where they eventually reclaimed the throne of Ala Mhigo.
